Birthday Celebration on Campus

As you may know our nation is experiencing an epidemic. We have an overrepresented number of children who are obese or overweight. Overweight children have a greater chance of becoming overweight adults, which can lead to many health problems such as : Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, joint problems and some types of cancer.  There is a call for action for all citizens to do their part and make healthier decisions regarding diet and exercise. The Lemon Grove School District has formed a Health and Wellness committee and each school has formed site committees.  We all have a role to play in reducing and preventing childhood obesity.   Your support is vital to ensure that our students are healthy, alert and ready to learn.  Please read below to find out how you can help the children at Monterey Heights.

Birthday Celebrations on Campus

In an effort to reduce the amount of high fat, high calorie food consumed by students, the Monterey Heights Health and Wellness committee made the decision to have birthday celebrations on the last Friday of every month.  If you wish to acknowledge your child’s birthday, please coordinate with your child’s teacher ahead of time so that there is a balance of healthy food options or alternatives available to our students.  Below you will find some suggestions. We appreciate your support in helping to keep our children healthy.

Bright Ideas to Make Your Child’s Birthday Special

Instead of bringing birthday treats to your child’s school, bring fun party favors.  Be sure items are age-appropriate.  Here are some ideas:

Jump Ropes

Colored pencils or crayons

Other P.E. equipment

To save money, you can buy many of these items at discount stores or outlets.

Birthday Book Bash!

Wrap your child’s favorite book in bright birthday wrapping paper and bring it to the classroom on your child’s birthday.  The teacher can unwrap the book and read it to the group.  This is a great way to celebrate your child’s special day!

Healthier Food Options

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables trays
  • Bite-sized sandwiches
